Emperor Scorpions - Pandinus imperators

Pet Emperor Scorpions
Emperor scorpion is also known as Panidinus Imperator or imperial scorpion. The emperor scorpion is one of the largest scorpions in existence. There is only one other scorpion that rivals the in size and that is the Heterometrus swammerdami. The panidinus imperator originates in Africa. Emperors can live up to 8 years in captivity. They are one of the most docile scorpions there is. Their sting is mostly very mild and they rarely sting unless provoked. Many people equate the sting to that of a bee. Granted if you are allergic it can have a worse affect.

Sexing
Sexing Emperor scorpions can be a little tricky but with practice anyone can do it. The males have larger pectines and the female smaller ones. You can see a picture of this here Example

Breeding
Emperor scorpions will readily breed in captivity if properly cared for. There is nothing special to do but introduce a male female into a well suited cage. After mating the female takes about 7 months before she will produce the young.

Care
In the wild emperor scorpions like to burrow. Providing them with 3 inches of substrate and plenty of moisture is the main key to a happy emperor. Temperature should remain between 75 - 85 degrees. A nice hiding place for the emperor is great also. Have a small water dish so that they always have access to the water.

Ailments or sick
If your emperor seems to stop eating or seems very sluggish there is usually something wrong. The most common cause of death is a bad shed which is usually related to not having the humidity high enough in your enclosure. Another problem is over eating. If your Pandinus imperator is especially swollen you might want to slow down the eating. Lastly they can get mites. With a magnifying glass you can see these. If you notice mites use a small paint brush to remove them.
